After 1 year, 24 days I will have once again joined the IT workforce.

After numerous rounds of layoffs (indeed the last one that I have heard of) and about 3 and a half years, MCI decided to part company with me June 3, 2004. There's obviously more to the story and bitterness abound, but it's pointless to discuss it here...buy me a beer, send me an email and we'll talk......

Incidently, it was precisely 1 month after I bought my first house and one day after I bought my first brand new vehicle ever (I actually was 95% certain I was going to be laid off when I made the truck purchase...I already had a truck payment and the new one would have a warranty).

So on Monday, June 27, 2005, I re-enter the IT industry in a new field with a new company. Well, EMC is new to me, not new to the world. The move from data networks to data storage is actually pretty exciting to me. Ask me sometime and I will send you the boring email I sent to my friends.

So what did I do for a year and 24 days?

* Collected my Severance
* Collected my Vacation Pay
* Drove a car to Detroit (first time there)
* Went to a casino
* Lost money in a casino
* Collected 6 months of unemployment
* Worked as an Exit Poller on election day 2004
* Bartended at a Durham nightclub
* Bartended at a North Carolina Beer& Wine Association Party for legislators
* Bartended at a Wedding Announcement Party
* Bartended at a Swanky Wedding Reception Party
* Built Websites
* Designed Flyers
* Designed a newsletter for NCPEN.org
* Worked at Alltel Pavillion as an Usher
* Helped People Move/Rented out My truck
* Ripped CDs
* Pestered Everyone I knowfor jobs at their place of employment
* Extinguished approx $15k from my 401k (easy to do once you get penalized and taxed on the money)
* Sold the only stock I owned
* Sold my bicycle
* Went to Upstate NY twice
* Went to Charlotte a couple of times
* Went to Asheville Camping
* Spent alot of time on the internet

So back to work fer me...excited, happy, entusiastic...

My parents bought a house in clayton and my sister is having one built there. Looks like the Kolbs are showing a bigger presence in the area.
